Arizona Diamondbacks mental approach key down stretch

azcentral sports

It's no secret that players in any sport want their team to do well. They want to be playing meaningful games as the regular season approaches its end.

The secrets, then, lie in how to make that happen.

The Diamondbacks enter Tuesday night's matchup with the San Diego Padres, the first of their final 16 regular-season games, trailing the St. Louis Cardinals by 41/2 games for the National League's second wild-card berth, and have four other teams ahead of them.

It's a tough spot, but for now the games remain meaningful, and a strong mental approach is an important element.

"Coming to the field every day, I've never really been a part of scoreboard watching or watching other teams and seeing what they've been doing," Diamondbacks third baseman Chris Johnson said. "This is all new to my career. It's exciting. You rush into the locker room after a win and then go and check what the other teams are doing."

Clubhouse morale is high, and there is no mistaking the Diamondbacks' intensity and seriousness.

"When you can feel that you're that close, and there's that light at the end of the tunnel, it makes it exciting," second baseman Aaron Hill said. "They call it the dog days of summer around this time, but when you got something to play for as far as a playoff spot, it makes it a lot easier to get through because it just gives you a little extra adrenaline."

Higher adrenaline and fiery passion may not always work to a player's advantage, however.

Dr. Jim Afremow is a sports psychology specialist at Arizona State University who has consulted with players from across Major League Baseball. He said knowing how one's mind and body work is the key to performing in stressful situations.

"One of the misconceptions about mental readiness is that you need to psych up for the game," Afremow said. "My response is that you need to psych right for the game. For some guys it might be to actually downplay the importance of the game. They might be too hyped, and they might need to just think, 'This is what I do every day and I just need to trust my teammates and do what I do.'

"Other guys might need that little extra boost to fire themselves up."

If the Diamondbacks fail to erase their deficit, and the playoffs begin to drift out of reach, players will face another pivotal decision: whether to throw in the towel and start looking to next year.

The team was certainly met with that temptation in 2009 and 2010, when it finished 22 and 26 games out of a playoff spot, respectively.

"You're (out of the race) in September, you know it's going to be a long month," catcher Miguel Montero said. "You're showing up because you have to show up, but you don't even want to because you're so tired and you're playing for nothing, pretty much. It's not a good feeling."

But Afremow said going through the motions can have effects that stretch beyond just that season.

"I think it was Gary Player that said he would rather finish 112th in a tournament than 113th because he wants to know that he's always doing his best," Afremow said. "Too many golfers, if they're going to miss the cut or they don't have a chance to win, might just try to get through the round or the rest of the tournament. Then when they're on Sunday with a chance (to win), it's going to be even more difficult because they haven't mentally prepared for it."

"... So if you are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs and the season is still going on, then the rest of the games of the season should be your playoffs, so the next time you are in a playoff run, it feels like you've been there before.

Diamondbacks reliever Matt Lindstrom has seen hopeless Septembers, but there is always professional pride.

"The difference is a lot of guys are trying to win jobs for the next year," he said. "The feeling is not as good as it is when there's a playoff implication in mind, but you just got to keep grinding out the games and get ready for next year, and keep that focus."

Whether the Diamondbacks make the postseason remains to be seen, and for all of Afremow's insight, Montero knows where his own attention lies.

"The main key here is to focus on one game at a time, one game at a time," he said. "We just got to worry about today, and we'll figure it out from here."

Up next

San Diego Padres

Padres update: These are the final three games the Diamondbacks will play against the Padres this season. That's probably a good thing. With each meeting, the Padres seem to be an even better team than they were before. They're 19-6 since Aug.19 and 43-26 since June29. They've been winning in different ways, including with a red-hot offense, something that's almost never been the case for the Padres, certaintly not since they moved into Petco Park in 2004. 3B Chase Headley has been one of baseball's better players in the second half, and OF Jesus Guzman (.906 OPS), OF Carlos Quentin (.848), OF Chris Denorfia (.836) and C Yasmani Grandal (.827) also have performed well since the All-Star break. The Padres also finished strongly in 2009 and wound up winning 90 games in 2010.

New York, Los Angeles return to prominance in NBA

by Paul Coro - Sept. 17, 2012 07:38 PM
azcentral sports

Big-city basketball is twice as nice again in the NBA.

Nearly as predictable as a Los Angeles Lakers ascension this season, the NBA is about to enjoy its two-city metropolises' finest season in two decades. The Lakers, Clippers, Knicks and Nets have not made the playoffs in the same season since 1993.

That is almost a certainty this time. The Los Angeles teams have risen to be potential home-court playoff teams in the West while New York and -- still getting used to this -- Brooklyn are competitive second-tier playoff teams in the East.

Good teams in the largest markets are ideal for the NBA, although the league's allure has been just fine. A Western Conference finals series between teams in the 36th (San Antonio) and 44th (Oklahoma City) markets drew 16 percent more fans than Dallas-Oklahoma City did for the 2011 conference finals.

Summer personnel shifting pulled the Lakers in front of the Clippers, who resent such assumptions, and might have vaulted the Nets past the Knicks to the tune of "Hello Brooklyn."

The Clippers finished a game behind the Lakers last season. They added ex-Lakers to improve depth (Matt Barnes, Ronny Turiaf and Lamar Odom) but the present Lakers widened the gap with the jaw-dropping acquisitions of Steve Nash and Dwight Howard.

This Hollywood plot is already tense. Blake Griffin told The Daily Oklahoman: "On paper, it (the Lakers' team) looks great. People said that same thing when we got CP."

Metta World Peace told Los Angeles' ESPN Radio that the Lakers are aiming for Chicago's 72-win record after saying, "I don't see anybody getting past us this year at all."

While that might raise eyes in Oklahoma City, Chris Paul won't allow the Clippers to be discounted. When Dan Patrick asked him if the Lakers' additions made him nervous, he said, "No, why should I be?"

A Lakers title is not a definite but anything short of it will be deemed a failure, especially after addressing serious bench issues by signing Antawn Jamison and Jodie Meeks. The Lakers can't be a sure thing while putting in a new offense that takes the ball from Kobe Bryant and Nash more often or by having a starting lineup with more bad backs than a chiropractor's lobby. They certainly are no lock with Oklahoma City being a year wiser with an MVP in waiting.

What the Lakers do have is six All-Stars, all whom have been the best player on a team, including three (Bryant, Nash and Howard) who had that role just last season. The Clippers need Chauncey Billups and Grant Hill to help mature Blake Griffin into a more complete and unflappable player.

In New York, a middle-of-the-East battle has never been so intriguing. The Nets stand to be the most improved East team after adding Joe Johnson to a roster including Deron Williams, Brook Lopez and Gerald Wallace.

This new borough battle already got good at the money level when towering Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov referred to Knicks owner James Dolan as "that little man" in New York Magazine. Tyson Chandler and Carmelo Anthony dismissed the Nets as a budding rival but it is hard to ignore what is going on across the East River.

Brooklyn has a new arena, new uniforms and $300-plus million of new contracts. New York has a revamped arena, tweaked uniforms and the return of Raymond Felton to help make up for Jeremy Lin's departure. The Knicks also added Jason Kidd, Marcus Camby and Kurt Thomas to make season-ticket holders feel young, but they still have to figure out the Amar'e Stoudemire-Carmelo Anthony dynamic.

The Knicks lost more than they won when the two started together last season, a year that Stoudemire was staggered by injury and his brother's death. Stoudemire and the front line could be the reason the Knicks outperform the Nets, whose backcourt and improved health could be reasons they catch up.

Like in LA, this is a new city rivalry with teams rarely competitive simultaneously. Unlike LA, this little brother pounds his chest.

ASU football's two-quarterback system backfired against Missouri

by Doug Haller - Sept. 17, 2012 07:02 PM
azcentral sports

For the first time, Arizona State's two-quarterback system backfired last Saturday, but it doesn't sound as if the Sun Devils are ready to make changes. Sophomore Taylor Kelly will start Saturday against Utah and redshirt-freshman Michael Eubank is expected to be used in certain packages, as usual.

"We're using the system," coach Todd Graham said. "It's been very effective, so we're not questioning the things we're doing. Taylor's our quarterback. I got a great deal of confidence in him. I got a great deal of confidence in Michael Eubank. If we'll continue to play him, it will pay off for us big-time because he's going to be a big-time player."

With last Saturday's game against Missouri on the line, offensive coordinator Mike Norvell sent in Eubank after Kelly had driven the Sun Devils to the 1-yard line, a move that worked well through two weeks. Eubank tried to run on the next two plays and was stuffed. (Graham later said ASU was supposed to hand-off to junior Marion Grice on third down, but the play call never got to Grice.) On fourth down, Kelly re-entered and threw incomplete in the end zone, and the Sun Devils lost a golden chance to take the lead.

One thing that's certain: Kelly has impressed Graham. The first-year quarterback started slowly against Missouri, but made huge third-down plays in the second half to keep drives alive. On two, Graham said he was screaming for Kelly to throw away the ball, only to watch him complete passes.

"He made mistakes," Graham said. "There's no question about it. But I'm telling you this: We have a real quarterback. There's no doubt in my mind about that. That guy's a winner. How he carries himself, how he conducts himself. He's just got that 'it' factor. You could look him in the eye on Game Day and see it. You look at how he brought (us) back. He made some spectacular plays."

During games, Graham said he runs special teams with special-teams coordinator Joe Lorig and that he's also "very, very involved" in ASU's defense. When ASU has the ball, Graham said he talks with Norvell, but the conversations usually focus on what the opponent is doing defensively. Norvell calls the plays. And Graham again emphasized that he trusts all his coordinators and prefers to let them do their jobs.

"Obviously, you're going to call plays and when they work everybody thinks you're a genius," Graham said. "Last week, everybody was talking about what a genius we are on offense and then this week they're wondering why you called what you called or why you did what you did. We're going to do the things we believe in."

More touches for No. 6?

Senior tailback Cameron Marshall -- on the preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award, which is given to the nation's best running back -- got just four carries against Missouri. He produced 15 yards. Graham said ASU has to get him more involved, but suggested it won't be easy.

"(Marshall) missed a lot of practice in preseason camp," Graham said. "He had a hamstring that was bothering him, and it kind of slowed the development a little bit, but he's a guy we want to get the ball to. (But) we have other guys, too, that we want to get the ball to. We want to get the ball to (senior receiver) Jamal (Miles), we want to get the ball to (freshman running back) D.J. Foster, we want to get the ball to Marion Grice, we want to get the ball to (junior tight end) Chris Coyle. We want to get the ball to whoever we got to get it to to win games, but we no doubt want to get (Marshall) more involved in what we're doing."

Marshall's four carries were his fewest since running four times in the 2010 opener against Portland State. Entering Week 4, he has rushed for just 81 yards, averaging 3.3 yards per carry.

Briefly

About two hours before last Saturday's game, Graham asked sophomore Deantre Lewis, "Do you have any idea what you're doing?" According to Graham, Lewis, moved from running back to defense just six days earlier, said he did and so he started as a nickel cornerback.

"He was playing in two different packages," Graham said. "... He did a good job. He really did. He's a great athlete. He wants to play and his role, as he learns, will continue to increase."

Moving forward, Graham said Lewis will continue to practice on defense, although he didn't rule out the former running back getting used on offense. Graham praised Lewis' unselfishness. "There's very few running backs that I have known throughout the years that would be willing to do that," he said.

ASU lined up with four down linemen on defense against Missouri, but don't read much into it. Graham said the Sun Devils' scheme will depend on the opponent and could change from week to week.

On starting Pac-12 play Saturday against Utah: "Our guys know they start counting this week," Graham said. "Our goal and our focus is conference play and winning championships, and it starts this week."

Arizona Cardinals escape New England Patriots

by Kent Somers - Sept. 16, 2012 01:26 PM
azcentral sports

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- It probably is hyperbole to say the Cardinals season hung in the balance as the Patriots' 42-yard field goal attempt sailed left in the final seconds Sunday at Gillette Stadium.

It was just the second game, one-sixteenth of a season, and the leaves in New England still think it's summer.

But despite the obvious disclaimers, the Cardinals' 20-18 victory was the sort upon which a football season can pivot. In today's sports vernacular, they are called "statement" games, although coach Ken Whisenhunt recoiled at that premise.

"Naw, we don't want to talk about statements," Whisenhunt said. "It's two games, OK? I'm proud of our guys, the way they worked, the way they played."

Only time will tell if the victory will mean more than that. Maybe in January, the Cardinals will point to Sept. 16 as a defining moment in a successful season. Or maybe it won't seem nearly as important as it does on Sept. 17.

Whatever.

For one day at least, the Cardinals defied odds. They were 13 1/2-point underdogs. The Patriots were 10-0 in home openers since moving to Gillette in 2002. They were 18-2 against NFC teams there.

Now, they are 10-1 and 18-3 and 1-1. Right now, that's enough for the 2-0 Cardinals.

"Some guys in the locker room describe it as a statement game," said cornerback Patrick Peterson, who had an interception in the first quarter. "But we'll have to wait and see what the rest of the season has for us."

In typical Cardinals fashion, nothing that happened in the last few minutes was typical.

They lost a fumble. The Patriots had a touchdown run called back. And Stephen Gostkowski, who had four field goals in the game, including two from more than 50 yards, shanked the potential game winner to the left.

"It's crazy, it's nuts," quarterback Kevin Kolb said. "It seems to be just our vibe: As soon as you think you get in a rhythm, or as soon as things are done, then something sparks it up."

Dating to last season, the Cardinals have won 9 of their past 11 games. Four of those were in overtime. The largest margin in the other five was four points.

"I'll tell you what," Peterson said, "if it's close, I think we have a pretty good chance of pulling it out."

The Cardinals outplayed the Patriots throughout, but were fortunate to win. They led 20-18 and were trying to run the clock out when running back Ryan Williams fumbled with 1:01 left.

Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes caused the fumble by putting his helmet on the ball, although it appeared Williams made a mistake by trying to make something out of a play that was going nowhere.

Whisenhunt couldn't offer an opinion on that.

"I'm still traumatized by seeing the ball pop out," he said.

He wasn't the only one. Williams, who has fumbled in his only two NFL games, fought a losing battle with his emotions on the sideline.

"I was just doing my best not to cry on the field, national TV," Williams said. "And I ended up crying anyway."

The Patriots recovered at the Cardinals 30 and two plays later had a 30-yard touchdown run nullified by a holding penalty on tight end Rob Gronkowski.

They still managed to move to the 18-yard line, where coach Bill Belichick decided to have quarterback Tom Brady kneel down on two successive plays to set up Gostkowski's attempt on the last play.

He missed it badly.

"There's probably not another game where I'd be more confident going out for a kick like that," Gostkowski said. "It humbles you really quickly. I had a chance to make a big impact on the game and it turned South."

After the game, the Patriots talked about how they had practiced poorly leading up to the game. And losing starting tight end Aaron Hernandez to an ankle injury in the first quarter hurt their cause.

But the Cardinals didn't play a perfect game, either. They lost two fumbles. And while Kolb was efficient, he missed a couple of open receivers for big plays.

The Cardinals, however, looked far better than they had since reporting to training camp. Brady was sacked four times and the Cardinals limited big plays in the passing game. They blocked a punt and turned it into a touchdown. And while they gained only 245 total yards, 75 of that came on a touchdown drive in the fourth quarter.

If the Cardinals made a statement in Sunday's game, Kolb summed it up as this:

"It wasn't like we played a perfect game," he said. "We have a lot to improve on and like I said, if you can get those ugly wins checked off, that's big."

Rewind

Key player: Defensive end Darnell Dockett. He had four tackles but one of them was for a loss. And it was his tipped pass that Patrick Peterson intercepted in the first quarter.

Key moment: The Patriots trailed 13-9 midway through the third quarter. They had a nice drive going when they faced a third-and-6 at the Cardinals 30. Danny Woodhead took a handoff to the right, and Dockett tackled him for a 9-yard loss. That took the Patriots out of field-goal position, forcing them to punt.

Key number: 1 for 3: That's what the Patriots were when it came to scoring touchdowns in the red zone.

Injury report: Tight end Todd Heap (knee). Heap said he's fine, but players usually say that. There probably won't be more information until mid-week.

View from the press box: Two things you don't often experience at Gillette Stadium: quiet and boos. The crowd of 68,756 was oddly quiet through much of the game. When they did make noise, it occasionally was because they were booing the Patriots offense. They especially didn't like some of the play-calling, including running plays on third down.

What we learned

Offense: So the Cardinals gained only 245 yards, but statistics don't tell the story of Sunday's game. Coordinator Mike Miller and the rest of the offensive staff put together a creative game plan that included cornerback Patrick Peterson taking direct snaps, quarterback Kevin Kolb running up the middle for a 5-yard score and the team successfully executing a screen pass. The Cardinals were able to stick with their game plan of being patient and not forcing things. Kolb lost a fumble, and he'll kick himself for a long time for missing LaRod Stephens-Howling on a screen pass. Stephens-Howling had open ground and several blockers ahead of him. But Kolb showed toughness and made some key plays. The offensive line, which has taken a lot of criticism, yielded one sack and the Cardinals rushed for 105 yards. It took 33 carries to get there, but any time you can run it 33 times, something is going right for you. Tight end Todd Heap was a big factor again, catching five passes for 62 yards. His knee injury is a cause for concern. It's impossible to give receiver Early Doucet enough credit for a 9-yard gain made at the end of the third quarter. Doucet took a vicious hit by hung on for the first down. Some fans questioned the wisdom of pitching the ball to Ryan Williams in the final minute. But the pitch wasn't the problem, fumbling later was. Williams was trying to make something out of nothing and should have just gone down.

Defense: If the Cardinals play all year like they did Sunday, coordinator Ray Horton will be a head coach in the league in 2013. He relied less on pressure than normal, counting on four rushers to get to Tom Brady. They did a decent job, finishing with four sacks. But the secondary deserves most of the credit for those. Brady had nowhere to go with the ball. Defensive end Calais Campbell benefitted from two coverage sacks. Campbell and fellow end Darnell Dockett, however, made huge stops in the run game. The Cardinals stayed in their nickel scheme most of the day, with cornerback Jamell Fleming in and nose tackle Dan Williams coming out. The linebackers and defensive backs played well most of the afternoon. Rarely did the Patriots have receivers running wide open and rarely did the Cardinals miss a tackle. Want to know what a burgeoning star looks like? It's linebacker Daryl Washington. He had 13 tackles, including one for loss. It gets lost amidst the chaos at the end of the game, but safety Kerry Rhodes had great coverage on Rob Gronkowski on the failed two-point conversion attempt.

Special teams: The Cardinals are convinced they are in the heads of kickers throughout the league. Maybe so. They've blocked 13 field goals since 2008, including one last week. They think that has an impact on kickers. Maybe that was to blame for Stephen Gostkowski's 42-yard miss on the final play, but who knows? After yielding two big plays a week ago, the Cardinals made some of their own on Sunday. Quentin Groves blocked a punt that resulted in a touchdown. Punter Dave Zastudil averaged 46.7 yards and pinned the Patriots at the 9 and the 10-yard lines. Kicker Jay Feely made both field-goal attempts, from 38 and 47. He is 4-for-4 this season.

4. Tak dapat berteman dengan lawan jenis
Sebelum menikah, mungkin Anda memiliki sahabat dekat lawan jenis. Tetapi setelah mengikat simpul pernikahan semuanya menjadi dipertanyakan.

Romantis Dengan Secangkir Kopi

Written By empatlima on Rabu, 07 Maret 2012 | 08.20

Jangan lupa ucapkan "I love you, baby" saat menghidangkannya.

Written By empatlima on Selasa, 06 Maret 2012 | 04.53

Menurut data Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), roti ternyata menjadi sumber sodium paling tinggi dalam pola makan orang Amerika.
